How to record a promo at KCR

Preparation

Find some instrumental music that is reflective of your programme.  Write a Script.  The script should contain: show name, time and day, and a brief description.  Do not include the Station ID.  30 seconds max.

Recording Your Voice

Open Soundforge (the icon is on the Studio B computer desktop). Click red record button, check the monitor box (this enables record meters). Check that the mode is create a new window for each take, and check that the settings are at 44,100 hz, 16 bit , mono. You want your voice level to be around -6 db on the record meters. Now you're ready to record your voice.  Press record on Soundforge again.  Bring up mic faders on board. Read script.  Press stop on Soundforge.
Close record window.  Save file as "show name promo voice ", in c/audio data/"yourname".

Click red record button, check the monitor box (this enables record meters).

Recording Background Music

You want this level to be no more than -18 db on the record meters. Press record on Soundforge again.  Bring up music fader on board. Play about 10 seconds more music than your voice track.  Press stop on Soundforge.
Close record window.  Save file as "show name promo music ", in c/audio data/"yourname".

Mixing these tracks

Create a third file by going to the file menu, selecting new. Name this "show name promo mix ", in c/audio data/"yourname".

Copy the music file and paste it into the mix file. Now copy your voice Find where you want your voice to come in over the music and click on that spot to set the cursor there. Now go to edit - paste special, and select mix. Start with those two levels at 100% or 0 db. Preview the result, and adjust the levels to get an appropriate mix between voice and music. You want your voice loud enough to hear it over the music. Once you have a good mix, click on ok. Save this mixed file.

Trimming and fading the mixed track

Now cut off any excess music at the beginning and end of the track. Finally apply a fade in to the first 2 seconds. Do this by selecting the two seconds of muic at the beginnging and then go to process - fade - in. And apply a fade out to the last two seconds by selecting the last two seconds and then go to process - fade - out.

Now you need to create an mp3 file.

Open Internet explorer.  Go to mp3.kootenaycoopradio.com.  "Browse" for your file " show name promo mix" in c/audio data/yourname.  Once selected press upload.  Wait a couple of mintues.  When the mp3 has been created, the full file path and length of promo will be displayed on the top of the right hand column

Now you need to put this mp3 on Paddy - Sponsor Computer.

Point the mouse over the file at the top of the list on the right hand column.  Right click the file, pull down to "save target as", left click and browse for paddy/promos.  Find a number that is not being used by another promo in that folder and enter the file name using this number like this:   number / space / showname promo
   eg.    17 Counterspin promo

Now record this number on the promo list in Studio A (in front of turntables).
