Kootenay Co-op Radio is EXCITED to announce some new resources available to rural radio-makers in the Kaslo and New Denver areas - handheld audio recorders available to borrow!

Random Acts of Co-operation

Kootenay Co-op Radio's Random Acts of Co-operation is a 5 -part radio series exploring the thriving co-operatives and credit unions of the Kootenays.

The series is currently airing on KCR Wednesdays at Noon.

It was produced with financial assisitance from the Community Radio Fund of Canada, in celebration of 2012-the UN -Declared International Year of Co-operatives.

This series presents the voices of people involved in our local co-ops and credit unions, discusses our connection to the wider national and international co-op movement, and features collages of street interviews conducted by students at the Nelson-based Wildflower Elementary School.

In the East and West Kootenay, a rich history of co-operation has arisen over the last century, in which people have banded together to serve their economic, social and cultural needs. Land co-ops, transportation co-ops and food buying clubs have been a big part of the area's history.

These days, social entrepreneurs, community organizers and leaders in economic development have returned to the co-op movement's internationally-established principles of mutual aid, concern for community, and democratic governance to form successful cooperative businesses that generate surpluses, and non profit co-ops that respond successfully tocurrent social and economic challenges.

The diversity of the co-ops formed over time in the Kootenays has reflected the diversity of individuals, interests, and economic situations of the area, and their development has helped to provide residents with services and opportunities that are unique to a region with such a relatively small population.
