Kootenay Co-op Radio Booth Volunteers Needed.

Are you good with people, enjoy being out and about, feel confident talking with people about community radio if you had all the information you could imagine to resource?
Let us know who you are.

Volunteering at a Kootenay Coop Radio Booth is fun, for those that like talking to people.

The Booth is so important as a public point of contact in so many ways: foremost it generates awareness of the organization, that a local not for profit community service radio station is available and accessible.

Other important things that happen at a booth, as a volunteer you help the station by selling T-shirts, Memberships, Bumper Stickers, and when in season, Raffle Tickets, these all are revenue generating concepts that assist the station in covering operational costs.

Most common things that happen at a booth:
People are happy to see you, some may just walk by, but those who are interested are really friendly and happy to connect.
Membership connection, where people can become a member, or renew their membership, they will ask questions about what membership means, etc.

If you are interested in volunteering at a booth - please either email: membership at kootenaycoopradio dot com or call the station 250-352-9600 and leave your contact information so the Booth Coordinator may contact you for orientation and scheduling.

The next round of Booth Activity in the community starts April 22nd to May 31st.
Through the month of May, there will be booth activity between 3 to five days a week.

Membership Committee needs volunteers

Have you wondered what you could do more to support your community radio station: CJLY?

Do you have a few hours every month to volunteer? Do you have skills with data management, special event planning, personal relations, delivering information over the phone, etc...?

The Board of Directors has created a new committee that will meet monthly all year long. This committee is designed to meet the needs of membership development at CJLY.

The Membership Committee meets every third Friday of each month at 3:30 pm, at the radio station (308A Hall St. Nelson B.C.)
There are two Membership Drive Weeks in a Year, one in the Fall, & one in the Spring. Memberships are available all year long though.

The Spring Membership Drive will take place between Sunday May 9th and Saturday May 15 2010.
Where regular programming is replaced with as much live, as much local programming as possible, including special events at the station and in the communities that we broadcast to, out in the public presence with the CJLY booth, and much to plan before the week starts.
Planning the Spring Membership Drive starts on Friday February 19 at 3pm. If you are unable to join the committee but have some amazing ideas you wish to contribute, please email the committee: membership at kootenaycoopradio dot com

Membership means ownership at Kootenay Cooperative Radio. The first 2$ of a new membership, is the lifetime share in the cooperative. Giving the owner/member a vote at the AGM, and special general meetings. Annual dues keep the membership active, providing access to membership benefits such as the use of the membership card that has over 40 local businesses that offer members of CJLY discounts when shopping, an active member can win on air give away prizes, and receives discounts at CJLY hosted events and summer camp registrations.

As a not for profit community radio station that is growing in financial needs every year, it is essential to maintain a sustainable financial status - one way to this end is to encourage members to renew their dues annually, and to see growth in active membership numbers. (When CJLY applies for funding, the question is always present): How many active members does the organization have?

Transparency and accountability is essential for reporting to the membership, along with accurate records and data entry, and ongoing communication with the members that is respectful and representational of the organizations activities toward future sustainability.

The CJLY Membership Data Base report (as of February 9th 2010)
Total number of members in data base = 2,156
Total Number of Active Members = 587
Break down:
Low Income = 246, Regular = 244, Family = 71, Life Time Regular = 15, Life Time Family = 7, Organization/business = 4
---------------------------------------
Looking back into the past: Last Year at this time:
Total number of Active Members = 547
Break down:
Low Income = 219, Regular = 238, Family = 59, Life Time Regular = 14, Life Time Family = 5, Organization/business= 12

Membership Fees: $25, $45, $80 (Family) $125 (Business or Organization), $500 (Life Time Regular), $800 (Lifetime Family).

Discussion regarding adjusting membership fees have started. Questions on the table include: a) should we raise the fees, & b)should there be a sliding scale between the $25 & $45.

The Fall Membership Drive pledged amounts exceeded our goals, however the actual payment to the radio station of said pledges is lower than expected, with still $4,000 left in pledges outstanding. This committee is dedicated toward success being found in actual amounts dedicated to cover the annually increasing operational expenses.

Starting March 2nd, a telephone campaign will start, where every member on the list that is not active will be phoned, with a short three question survey to assist us in identifying the reasons as to why a member has not paid their annual fees, and to encourage them to renew. This is a huge task but so necessary in updating our data, even to know if (say) that member has moved away (for example).

Annual General Meeting 2009 Update

Welcoming New Board of Directors at Kootenay Co-op Radio

On October 21st, at the Scout Hall in Nelson B.C. the Kootenay Cooperative Radio Annual General Meeting saw the forming of a renewed Board of Directors.

Kootenay Cooperative Radio welcomes the following Directors to the Board who are joining ongoing Directors, Lise Godin, Bob Olsen, & Nancy Likness.

Welcome on Board: Michael Murray, Kimberley Scott, David Beringer, John Humphrey, Bill Levey, Devorah MacLean, Susan Kurtz, & Catherine Fisher. We all look forward to the years ahead working with these dedicated volunteer directors.

We thank the efforts of out-going directors who have dedicated vast amounts of time and energy, Alon Gelcer, Dustin Cantwell, Heather Dahlgrin, Gord Andrews, &Teressa;Hodsall. (Gord Andrews and Teressa Hodsall continue as Fund-Raising Committee members, Heather Dahlgrin remains on the Programming Committee, Dustin Cantwell remains on the Technical Committee, Alon Gelcer remains on the Community Connections Committee)

We look forward to the first Board Meeting in this term for the assignment of Directors as Committee Liasons. Thank you to all the past directors for the energy and time in assisting this local community radio station through matters involving governance decisions.

During the Annual General Meeting much was discussed with and presented to the membership present.

Including the presenting of the Hall of Fame Award to Tom Clegg, long time KCR volunteer who offers much support in regards to technical equipment and technological operations of the radio station.

During the Meeting there was an active and engaging discussion regarding the financial status of the organization during these times of global economic challenges & change. It has been reported that the business and membership support is something to celebrate, for even during times of economic challenge, sponsorship revenue is consistent with past years and growing with positive feedback from the local business community and listening members.

The continued solvency of KCR depends on the success of fund-raising events like Beat the Beats, and Membership Drives. Therefore Kootenay Cooperative Radio calls out the community to participate, to engage in the sustainability of locally-produced media. Those listeners in our community that enjoy KCR are encouraged to share in the experience, and to rally together as the community that built this little engine that could, to keep it running strong and free! (Not really “free” - but free in spirit!)

The next few months will see renewed energy in developing a short term and long term financial plan, continued efforts from the KCR Fund-Raising Committee and Community Connections Committee. Stay tuned and check in to the web site news items for upcoming details.

Call for Volunteers this Summer!

Good day everyone! There are some upcoming volunteer opportunities this summer at Kootenay Cooperative Radio.

1) KCR Youth Summer Radio Camp is in full swing, with Eve Haley as the Youth Camp Coordinator hired through the funding support of Service Canada Summer Jobs Program, and the success of last years Youth Radio Camp to give us leadership and direction for this year. There are many ways volunteers who also have a great way with kids, can participate. If you are interested in participating in the various workshops that will essentially teach the youth everything about community radio - please connect with Eve at 250-352-9600 or email radiocamp at kootenaycoopradio dot com. Last year there were some great moments in radio history as youth took short workshops on: Interviewing Skills, What is Radio & how does it work, Your Voice & the Mic, Planning a Music Program, Editing spoken word pieces, along with field trips to festival/markets and places of interest.

2) Volunteer Receptionist needed: The office at KCR gets super fun and busy in the summer with phone calls of inquiry, letters and newspaper articles to read, welcoming the public that come and visit, giving station tours, some data entry and web posting, and local event research. A detailed reception manual is available as a resource to help answer almost all the questions that come in, and we provide training to assist the volunteer receptionist to feel very comfortable in our office environment. A great way to spend some time at the station, getting to know the volunteers and the station overall. If this is of interest to you or perhaps someone you know, please feel invited to connect with Leah Wilson, Administrative Manager: 250-352-9600.

3) Fund-raising Committee is looking for those who are interested in being behind the scenes of the fun and exciting KCR events through the year. Monthly meetings start up in September, however there is much happening through the summer that volunteers can sign up for - such as festival booth and raffle activities.... If you have interest in making things happen in efforts of raising funds for Kootenay Cooperative Radio, and you have the time to commit to seeing such events take place, feel invited. We are looking for those particularly with skills in volunteer coordination, event planning, poster design, creative community initiative activity awareness, and who have a fun interested in community radio attitude. We put the FUN in Fund-Raising!
You may email fundraising@kootenaycoopradio, post to this forum thread, or call Leah 250-352-9600.

4) Music Library volunteers are invited. Our Library of music at the station is every growing, and it takes some time to listen and review it all before it goes to the Library, then the shelving and sorting of music in the Library can take some time too. This is a great way to spend time at the station, meeting the other volunteers and getting a feel for how the station works. Interested? Call 250-352-9600 to find out when the next training session is.
